The ultimate grown up drink: the Sex on the Beach cocktail is a layered tropical alcoholic drink traditionally made with vodka or rum, peach Schnapps, orange and cranberry juices served on the rocks in highball glasses. 100% Vegan!

Rumor has it that the cocktail was invented many moons ago in Miami during spring break when a bartender mixed Cape Codder with a Fuzzy Navel. Who knew ..?!

A seductive drink usually served during the hot and humid summer months, but a favorite cocktail of mine all year round that I find perfectly fit for a romantic Valentine’s dinner date. It’s:

  • Super Fruity
  • Gluten Free
  • So Delicious
  • Easy to Make
  • Gorgeous
  • Vegan!
Sex on the Beach cocktail - layered tropical alcoholic drink traditionally made with vodka or rum, peach Schnapps, orange and cranberry juices.

how to make a Sex on the Beach Cocktail:

Measure your ingredients in advance and just before serving divide them between two highball glasses filled with ice. Finish with a vanilla extract float because it’s more tasty that way or just to be fancy. I love creating the layered look of the drink but you can always mix everything up in a cocktail shaker if you prefer, but that step really isn’t necessary.

Get creative and experiment with flavored vodka: peach, strawberry, orange and cranberry would all compliment the drinks really well.

there are many variations of the Sex on the Beach cocktail:

From bar to bar and city to city, some bartenders prefer to use grapefruit or pineapple juices instead of orange. So don’t expect  to ever get the same thing twice when ordering out. I love when Malibu coconut rum is substituted for the vodka but still, most times than not I’ve been disappointed ordering it so I prefer to mix it up at home for a special occasion like Valentine’s day or a long hot weekend at the beach.

Since there’s no shaking and straining involved it makes for a perfect drink to prepare in big batches for a party. Serve it out of a pretty glass punch bowl surrounded by tropical flowers. Be warned: your guests might not want to ever leave so hang a few hammocks around 😉

good to know: there’s also a mocktail alcohol-free version of “Sex on the Beach” going by the names: “Safe Sex on the Beach Cocktail “, “ Virgins on the Beach “, or “ Cuddles on the Beach”, something you can even enjoy for breakfast if you want.

  1. Testing the mocktail version today and they are truly delicious. I can only imagine the rum will just make them even better but I don’t drink before 5 so now I have to wait a little 😉

  2. Hi there! Silly question here… I would like to put it in a beverage dispenser, so can I just keep doubling the measurements based on the number of people I will be serving? I see that this recipe is for 2 servings? Thanks so much!

  3. I love this recipe. I make mine at home all the time. Here’s a tip to make it taste even more exquisite. Split the orange juice in half and for the other half add pineapple juice. Sometimes I sub the regular malibu for the strawberry. Now that’s delicious. The best thing about this recipe is that it’s so versatile. Do whatever you feel. I’ve had it made at the bar all kinda of ways. Hope you like it 🙂

  4. What if you drop the cranberry juice?…
Add coconut milk or cream of coconut
    And add pineapple juice?
Optionally add the juice from peaches?
